New Book From Signature Press
Billboard Refrigerator Cars
by Richard H. Hendrickson and Edward S. Kaminski The practice of painting advertisements on the freight cars of shippers and car owners dates well back into the 19th century. But in the 1920s, leasing companies realized they could contract with shippers to pass back usage payments beyond some agreed minimum. This led to an explosion of car leasing and, as this book amply demonstrates, a corresponding explosion of billboard decoration of refrigerator cars. Railroad objections, especially to the usage payment rebates, led to hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission, which, taking effect in 1937, banned most of the leasing practices which had generated the car leasing bonanza. After World War II, a restrained billboard style made a modest comeback. Car-side advertising was only a detail of that ICC decision. But because it was the basis for a remarkable diversity of refrigerator car paint schemes in the era, the photographs of these cars have long held an interest for historians, railfans, and model railroaders. Thoroughly documented here are hundreds of these paint schemes, together with details of the leasing companies and car builders associated with the individual cars. More than 440 photographs, most previously unpublished, enrich this book. Even a modest amount of color information was available and is included. The authors, both recognized authorities on railroad freight car history, have done a superb job of collecting and organizing the information presented here. The book is sure to appeal to modelers and to many who are interested in railroad history.

China The World's Last Steam Railway Photographic Essay by John Tickner, Gordon Edgar & Adrian Freeman
China was the last country in the world to build steam locomotives. The final main line engines emerged from Datong workshops in December 1988 and production of steam locomotives for industrial use continued intermittently until September 1999. From over 4,000 steam locos in service on China Rail, the state-run national railway system at the beginning of 1996, the numbers dropped to single figures by the end of 2002. The final few were withdrawn in 2003 making China the world’s last country to use steam on its main lines. The Chinese authorities would like to see the last evidence of steam eradicated by the time of the 2008 Olympics. With the possible exception of a handful of remote industrial operations, it appears to be on course to achieve this target. When this happens, it will be the end of the world’s last mecca for fans of ‘real’ steam (commercial rather than preserved or museum operations) and scenes such as those shown in these pages will be history. Over a 10-year period these three photographers have visited China 35 times to create this photographic essay of a dying era. They show steam at work on China Rail, on ‘local’ railways – lines built and operated by individual provinces rather than the state, on industrial systems and on some of the many narrow gauge lines that once existed in China. National Geographic-quality photography accompanied by entertaining tales of the problems of travelling in China. Definitely not just for the steam enthusiast! Hardcover and jacket 176 pages 300 x 260 mm

A fascinating look at the monsters that ruled Eastern United States for almost a generation. It opens with scenes from Sunday River's "Baltimore and Ohio" and closes with Archie Julian's "Battle for the Blue Ridge". It features - in spectacular sync sound - the last and most efficient Main Line articulateds built in America, the B&O 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" locomotives. C&O streamlined Hudson's haul "The Sportsman" and "The George Washington". A single 2-6-6-6 westbound from Covington with 100 loaded hoppers creeps to the summit at barely 5 MPH and in contrast fast freights race thru White Sulfur and B&O articulateds pound thru Confluence and New Castle. South African Railways was perhaps the most extensive narrow gauge system in the world. The steam locomotives that roamed the rails here were big narrow gauge steam. Visitors board the train behind a former Southern Pacific steam locomotive for a trip through the beautiful Sacramento Valley. A train robbery is staged for the passengers and a great time is had by all. Those who desire can then board a steamboat traveling on the Sacramento River and enjoy a good meal and onboard entertainment. This route can be followed in the California and Nevada edition of SPV’s Comprehensive Railroad Atlas. Whilst in Old Sacramento I spent the night onboard one of the old steamboats and had a most enjoyable dinner before a great day at Sacramento museum. I can recommend the experience. Stu

Considered the all-time master of railroading art, Howard Fogg painted the power and majesty of the steel wheel on the steel rail. After rail fans discovered Fogg's artistry, he spent the next 50 years as a freelance artist reinventing the steam age. Howard Fogg's Trains commemorate the great age of railroading
Chartered in Pennsylvania in 1846, construction of the Pennsylvania Rail Road began in 1847, and the first all-rail line reached Pittsburgh in 1852. Eventually PRR connected Chicago with Washington, D.C. . Pennsylvania Railroad recalls the unique engines and trains of “The Standard Railroad of the World.”
Recalling the era of superlative trains, Richard Allison's American Passenger Trains presents a selection of American icons ranging from New York Central's 20th Century Limited, and the The Grand Canyon Limited, to The Katy Flyer, and Santa Fe's Super Chief. An award winning painter, Allison's work has been widely collected and exhibited at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
Chartered in 1849, the Milwaukee Road eventually extended its tracks across the northern tier of the U.S. to the Pacific Ocean. Noted for its passenger service and innovative electric trains, the line's successes were overshadowed by weak management and strong competition. Absorbed into the Soo line in 1986, CP Rail and other lines now run on former Milwaukee Road tracks.
Chartered in 1863, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway's first trains rolled the next year, and the line reached Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1880. By 1929, at its peak, the Santa Fe had over 13,000 miles of track. Santa Fe captures images of steam and diesel across this vast system.
