This program is a great companion to our DM&IR Yellowstones-Giants of Steam (G45). It has many things in it not seen in the other, which makes both programmes great to own. The new DM&IR Steam Variety has many scenes of Proctor Engine terminal as well as Two Harbors terminal. Yes, there is plenty of 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone footage, and besides the ore hauling, we see them performing ore-thawing service, and in some late steam-era excursion service as well. Besides the big Yellowstones we also see a variety of other DM&IR steam engines including switching duties with ex-Bessemer engines and DM&IR power. We will see the well-proportioned 2-10-4's and other locos moving about the yard areas too.
This footage is all 16mm film originals, and shot by Perry Becker of Minnesota. We have also included a few minutes of the nearby shortline Duluth and Northeastern Railway, that was shot by Maynard Laing during the same period as the Becker Films. All of the films have sound added by us. As with most films there was none that was shot on the film. However, we used audio that we had from 1958-59 visits recorded by Elwin Purington, that we also used on the DM&IR Yellowstones programme. All the audio on this Steam Variety program that shows Yellowstones, has Authentic Yellowstone audio with those scenes. Other locomotives may not be authentic to their classes, but in most cases the scenes don't matter that much, since they are slow switching moves. The Duluth and North Eastern Audio is authentic also, since it was recorded about the time they were there.
As mentioned there are few excursion scenes shown, including one in 1961 which had two Yellowstones running on two separate excursions on the exact same day. One was from Two Harbors and one from Duluth. We see shots from both, which had Yellowstones 224 and 225 on the different excursion trains.

New Books From Kalmbach
The Model Railroader's Guide to Logging Railroads
Matt Coleman explains the business of logging railroads and shows prototype operations by region. Photos of locomotives and other logging-line equipment and structures set the stage for modeling logging scenes and designing a logging layout. Railroads and the logging industry have been tied together since the mid-1 800s. For more than 100 years, railroads dedicated strictly to logging snaked into forests from the Pacific Northwest to New England and the Deep South, hauling logs from temporary camps to sawmills along rivers and coastlines. The Model Railroaders Guide to Logging Railroads traces the history of the timber industry and its railroads, following advances in logging methods and equipment, specialized rolling stock, and the development of geared steam locomotives, including the Shay, Climax, and Heisler designs. This book includes information and tips about: • Logging camps and structures • Sawmills and log ponds • Skeleton cars, log bunks, and other rolling stock • Loading and unloading log trains • Track planning for logging lines • Geared steam locomotives

HUNDMAN PUBLISHING
As many of you may already know, Hundman no longer producing magazines and have stopped publishing books. Many of their titles are in short supply but we have managed to secure a quantity of these superb, high quality Locomotive Cyclopedias
Mallory Hope Ferrell’s new book concentrates on the shortlines and logging railroads of the northeastern portion of the "Bible Belt". The “Bible Belt” is generally excepted as covering a sweeping wide arc of the south eastern United States extending from West Virginia to the piney woods of East Texas. It was in this territory that small steam powered lines lasted so long and so well. Some of the locomotives supported giant wood burning balloon stacks and archaic link and pin couplers to the very end of operations. Beautiful black and white photos of some of the small industrial locomotives used in this area including Climax, Shay, Saddle Tanks and many more.
Slow Trains Down South - Volume 2 by Mallory Hope Ferrell
A pictorial study of steam power on short lines and uncommon carriers of the "Bible Belt" in the glory years, from just prior to World War II, until abandonment or Dieselization overtook them. This volume concentrates on the deepest of the Deep South, and covers the small steam powered lines of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Eastern Texas.

We visit ten shortlines with scenes spanning from 1970 to 1998. Two of our visits include cab rides and access to two, truly great, shortlines - the A&NR of Texas and CORP in Oregon. See the Amador Central in its prime and up to the last day of operation. The Amador’s blue Baldwins and the Baldwins of the Trona bring you back to an earlier era of diesels. The ALCO diesels of many roads are in this video. Early GE power is brought to you on the Modesto & Empire Traction Co. The most dramatic chapter is on the CORP and its 3.6% grades with up to 6 units over the Siskiyou Mountains. Visit the people on several of these lines for an insider’s look at the business of running shortline railroads. FEATURES:- See CCT and its early electric days and the old ALCOs that made the switch to diesels plus modern action with GP-7s and GP-18s. See early electric and diesel views and some fascinating history as well as CCTs final days in Sacramento. The new Yolo Shortline was formed from segments of the former Sacramento Northern electric line. We pay a visit to their freight operation in the beautiful delta lowlands. The Amador Central is gone now but it may be reopened and we have views of the plucky old Baldwins in the Sierra foothills. Great Nostalgia, newer EMDs and freight action in the country air. Lufkin,Texas has its success story with the Angelina & Neeches River RR and their expanding business. We give the in depth story of an efficient shortline with interviews , great action and looks inside rolling stock and locomotives. The Central Oregon & Pacific operates 439 miles of former SP track and we will take you through the rugged Siskiyou Mountains up 3.6% grades with four and six unit locomotive sets. We interview the people who make it a success. Grades, tunnels and heavy lumber loads are only matched by the scenery Ride in the cab up to the summit and down Bailey hill.

Deshler is the crossing of the CSX north-south single track Toledo to Cincinatti line with the east-west double track Chicago line at grade. The tower still stands, but is now used by MoW. This area is fortunate to see all kinds of power, including NS, UP & BNSF, the CSX OCS with F40’s and even a couple of locals with cabooses, and several meets. Loads of action and a nice mix of liveries. Minimal narration.

There have been many DVDs and videos on the Durango and Silverton Railroad but this is the first from inside the cab. See the engineer and fireman at work and ride the cab of a Durango & Silverton 3 foot gauge former Rio Grande K-36 2-8-2. You’ll see the magnificent scenery, the crew at work, some run-by’s and through it all you’ll hear the engine at work, with some awesome stack talk. K-36 OVER CUMBRES PASS Ref S143 which was released in our February Newsletter proved to be extremely popular. Now The K-36 Cab Ride is the perfect accompliment. Both DVDs would be a great addition to any narrow gauge fan’s collection.

This DVD shows heavy coal trains up to 7000 tons and at a maximum of one mile in length running on 3 foot 6 inch narrow guage in Queensland. These trains are some of the heaviest trains you will see running on narrow guage tracks anywhere in the world. We get to see a number of trains headed by two 4000 class locomotives usually with a mid train helper. These engines are 3300 h.p., designed by Clyde Engineering and introduced in 2000. Where earlier 2800 and 2300 class locomotives are used four units are need to pull the heavy trains. Although mainly coal hoppers we do also see other freight movements. In addition to lots of coal traffic, you’ll see some passenger trains, including the Electric Tilt Train, Australia’s fastest, and some regular freights.
I do not know why but I had never thought of coal trains in Australia - quite a different feel to the coal drags we are used to in America

"Stateline & Jay Tower" C. Vision's tour of the railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 2. In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher sets up at two exciting locations and captures more dynamic train watching action! Our first stop is at Stateline Interlocking near Hammond, Indiana. Straddling the Illinois and Indiana border, Stateline was once the World's largest mechanical interlocking. This location was once home to 30 diamond crossings and has now whittled down to only 8. However, don't let the downgrade fool you, this location still has over 100 trains a day from the CSX, Norfolk Southern and Indiana Harbor Belt. Then we head to Chicago Heights, Illinois at Jay Tower. This location is the crossing of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and the Union Pacific/CSX. The variety of trains at this location makes it a favorite among many area railfans! Bright orange locomotives from the EJ&E, along with the high horsepower monsters from the UP and CSX thunder over the diamonds at Jay Tower. Our cameras were even treated to a couple appearances of the Union Pacific's Katy and MoPac Heritage Locomotives! If you like the sound of trains pounding diamonds, you will love this video!

C. Vision's tour of railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 3. In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher takes his cameras to multiple mainline crossings at the always busy Blue Island Junction. This location, most often distinguished by the big steel bridges spanning the Calumet Sag Channel, has a multitude of activity from host roads Indiana Harbor Belt, CSX, Canadian National and Metro's Rock Island District, which passes over the south end of the junction. Throw in a wide variety of pool power and the appearance of run-through moves by roads Canadian Pacific, Union Pacific and BNSF and you will see why Blue Island Junction is such a great Chicagoland hotspot. Due to the unique track arrangement of the junction, parallel moves from various roads can be seen occurring simultaneously, a sight our cameras had the opportunity to catch on many visits. In addition, shortline and regional action was found, including appearances from the Iowa Interstate and Chicago Rail Link. Add in predecessor power from the UP BNSF and the CN, and you will witness the cornucopia of action that this legendary hotspot is known for. For a colorful spectrum of freight and passenger action. Blue Island Junction cannot be beat!

Newport is one of many railroading hot spots in the Twin Cities area and C. Vision takes you here for an extensive look at the operations through this suburban city. Located just southeast of St. Paul, Newport is the point where the ex-CB&Q and Milwaukee Road main lines come together, along with the old Rock Island Route. Today, trains from the BNSF and Canadian Pacific operate these tracks. Add in trackage rights trains from the Iowa Chicago & Eastern and the passage of Amtrak's Empire Builder, and you can see why many railfans flock to this location. The old Milwaukee Road Dispatchers Tower still stands next to the tracks. From its new location next to Newport City Hall, a retired Milwaukee Road dispatcher gives us a tour and shares memories of his time working in the building. View trains from the tower, along with several awesome locations along the main line in Newport. Along with the BNSF, CP, IC&E and Amtrak, foreign power such as Norfolk Southern, Canadian National and the Indiana Railroad make appearances. Plus, plenty of Soo Line and Santa Fe locomotives lead several trains. Newport is an awesome train watching location and C. Vision brings it to you in this action packed program!

SPV CHAT
February is always a busy month for SPV as we have two large 3 day shows at the opposite ends of the country - Brighton and Glasgow both on consecutive weekends!! Luckily Brighton falls over the school half term holiday which enabled me to bring my son along to help. Jack, a strapping sixteen year old likes to prove his strength so I let him carry most of the heavy books when unpacking the van. It makes a huge difference to have some help on the stand and to have some company in the evenings. He has not be indoctrinated into the world of steam but did really enjoy being on the stand, meeting the customers and generally being involved in the business. Unfortunately school stopped him accompanying me up to Glasgow which is almost exactly 500 miles from the office. I could really have done with someone to give me a prod when I was feeling sleepy on the drive back! I hope that he will be able to join me at some other shows - the third generation of the Andrews family - are we forming a dynasty?
