Tennessee Pass Volumes 1 - 3
New Out! In late May and early June of 1997 Machines of Iron made one more trip to Tennessee Pass to see the some of the final days under Union Pacific control. We follow the line from Dotsero east through the Eagle River Valley passed Wolcott, Avon, Minturn, Belden, Redcliff, Pando, Mitchell to the Tennessee Pass on grades up to 3.3%. From the Tennessee Pass we head down grade along the Arkansas River through Malta, Kobe, Princeton, Buena Vista, Salida Canyon, Texas Creek, Parkdale to the Royal Gorge and finally to Pueblo. While we were in Minturn road foreman Roy Isabell spoke to us about the Union Pacific take over and impending closing. We also visited the famous Turntable Restaurant. This is mountain railroading at it's best, steep grades, helpers, and beautiful mountain scenery.

(Filmed 1999) Continuing our series on Tennessee Pass, Volume 2 captures train activity during all four breathtaking seasons on this mainline. In this video, we see why helpers are necessary to assist trains up the gruelling 3% grade on the western side, and we take a look at some of the foreign power used on this SP line. We also visit the Minturn terminal, and ride along in the cab from Minturn to the Pass. Incredible machines and spectacular scenery on a disappearing line.

In the late 1940’s it was readily apparent that steam was quickly being displaced by new diesels on the likes of B&M, CV, MEC, Rutland, and BAR. John Morrison, George Dimond and several other notable photographers began a systematic quest to record the vanishing breed on color film, the results of which are shown in this book. Also early diesel!

The logging "lokey" seemed to roam all over the timberlands of North America. These go-everywhere, do-everything mechanical beasts were the raucous cousins of the iron horse. Their distinct personalities fire the imaginations of modem steam wizards dedicated to keeping them alive. Many logging locomotives were run until they were totally worn out. At Mount Rainier in Washington State a home was given to some of these marvellous locomotives and even corroded hulks had a new breath of life breathed into them. Hear about the problems of restoration and running this unique railroad. Informative commentary compares the Shay, Heisler and Climax explaining their strengths and weaknesses as well as their unique engineering. See historically accurate action locations in the heart of big timber country. Featuring the diverse logging locomotive collection of the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Museum in Washington State. At the five steam locomotive event we get to see these fine engines at work, smoke rising high and their whistles reverberating through the woodland. • - Fully indexed for easy scene access. Modeling the Prototype Re-released on DVD
This DVD closely examines not only the operations of several logging railroads, but also how the trees were cut, loaded and then unloaded at the sawmill. Then, to really get the creative sap flowing, we'll show how three great modelers have applied the prototype practices to their layouts. The prototype railroads featured were shot on film between 1920 - 1960's. Railroads include the Westside, Rayonier, Mower, Ely-Thomas, Grasse River RR, and more. We also visit the outstanding layouts of Bob Clarke, Dr. Charles Patti, and Lou Ullian, each predominantly built around the logging industry. All three layouts have been featured in the modeling press. They are highly detailed and exemplify the complete industry, from trees to sawmills. Logging railroads were well known for their "make do" approach to railroading. Each of these layouts feature this approach. As a bonus, Bob Clarke will show how to make ground cover quickly and easily.

The German steam engine, 58 311, built in 1921, is the only working example of its class. The locomotive was retired by the DR in 1976, then sold to West Germany and was operating again from 1985 until this January. After years of exciting trips the boiler needs an overhaul which will result in a nearly new boiler. This CD presents recordings of 58 311 with specials on the AVG line to Bad Herrenalb and on branch and main lines of the DB. A true highlight is 58 311 storming uphill with a 1300 tonne limestone train. Over 50 minutes are recorded on the footplate, working a seven coach train and as rear end pusher on a 15 coach steam special. 10 scenes 76 mins digital stereo hifi sound.

In 1950 the first railbus built by Uerdingen entered service in Germany. The last of these reliable vehicles were active at the Tubingen shed, near Stuttgart in southern Germany. Since 1954 Tubingen was home for countless Uerdingen railbuses, they spent their final days on the rural line to Entringen bringing pupils from the villages along the 9.9 km line to their schools in Tubingen. The entire line was modernized in 2000 to enable better passenger service. The railbuses were replaced by modem railcars in summer 1999. Usually the early morning school trains, which are documented on this CD, consisted of three units of the twin-engined 796 class, by that time most trailers were already retired. 42 mins

Stuart & I took a trip to the States last month. We were royally entertained by Kalmbach (Connie, a fan of the British Royal family, tried pumping us for information about Prince William etc. but we were ignorant about royalty - she had more gossip than us!). We manned Model Railroader's layout and toured all of Kalmbach's impressive offices. I have been to Kalmbach several times but it was the first time for Stuart and he was well impressed. The 2007calendars are out but we thought we would spare you until next month but if you are desperate just ask. We then flew to LA to meet with Machines of Iron, Golden Rail Video and Charles Smiley. It was good to see old friends again and in this newsletter we see offerings from some of the LA based producers. I flew home but Stuart was joined by Lainy and they had a wonderful week sight seeing. He went to Yosemity, Lake Tahoe, San Franscisco and Sacramento for the railroad museum. He had to pat a cab forward (no trip to california is complete without visiting Tehachapi and patting a cab forward). Stuart was completely WOWED out. One fantastic view was followed by another and that wasn't counting the trains! I hope you all have a good summer railfanning . Ann
